Google Docs is a game changing piece of technology that takes collaboration and communication to another level. The National Council for the Social Studies prepared a "Technology Position Statement and Guidelines" that states that "technology and the social studies has the power to become a dynamic and forceful agent for change in the social studies curriculum, but only if the academic subject matter is enriched by a clear and comprehensive rationale for integrating technology with social studies" (NCSS, 2006). Google docs does just that. The clear and comprehensive rationale is that this program allows students to collaborate together digitally. They can build a presentation or a document all through the Web, while all working at the same time; therefore building their 21st century skills.
Research has proven that cooperative learning groups foster student learning, while technology in the classroom increases student engagement and motivation. As a teacher, I can build assessments, surveys, presentations and documents and share them with other educators and collaborate and edit each others' work. This changes how students learn. They are digitally engaged in a collaboration with other students inside as well as outside of the classroom.
