Welcome 10th Grade U.S. History Students!
Mr. Dye and I would like to thank you again for being a part of this amazing experience! We are incredibly excited to be able to work with you this semester and hope you gain as much from us as we do from you! We would like this blog page to be a place of reference and resources for you as we work through this unit. As we navigate through Imperialism and use technologies that are new to you, please remember that you can always come to this site and find tutorials on how to use everything we are using in class. We want this to be an exciting unit, where at times you will be challenged by the technology and content, but motivated and engaged! Please feel free to look through my other blog pages as well, but remember, it is a work in progress!

End of Unit Assessment- Video Project!
As you all know, Mr. Dye and I are working on a research project that is examining the use of technology in the social studies classroom. Part of our project is to have you all use a piece of technology in a project that involves a global issue, whether it be a current global issue or a historical global issue. Because we are studying imperialism, it fits in perfectly with our topic. We all know that imperialism had global implications and has affected millions of people around the world. The global impact of imperialism can still be felt today in many parts of the world. So your job is to spread awareness and be creative! You will work in groups of 3-4 and create a video about a imperialism and its global impact. You will have complete creative freedom! Think like a historian!! Are you pro expansion? Would you advocate to annex another country today? Could this ever happen now? Maybe your fellow students do not know, care, or understand what this did to other countries and their people and you want to spread the word? Maybe you want to play a global advocate? Maybe you want to compare and contrast the struggle of the Cubans to the Filipinos? Whether it is a PSA, documentary, skit, commercial, etc. be creative and remember- THINK GLOBAL!
We will discuss more possible movie topics and ideas in class. Your tentative timeline is as follows: You will have 1 day in class to brainstorm ideas and figure out the logistics in your group, 2 more in class days to film and interview or search the internet for supplemental additions, and 1 in class day to upload and edit your movie. Prepare yourself to utilize time OUTSIDE OF CLASS! Coordinate study halls together, stay after school, or meet at each others houses if you need to. But this should be plenty of time! Remember, you are being given this information at the beginning of the unit so you have time to think of possible topics within the realm of U.S. imperialism and kick around some ideas.
We will also spend a day celebrating your hard work with a little par-tay and present your videos to the class. I would be more than pleased to upload your videos to my blog and broadcast them to the world! Again, there will be more detail in class, but this is a chance to get the gears moving and those creative juices flowing! Good luck and we CANNOT WAIT to see what you all have come up with!

Above is a great video to help in your editing! Fast Forward to the 58 second mark and the rest is very self explanatory!
Google Docs
Google docs is an excellent tool that we will also be using throughout the unit. Google docs is similar to Microsoft documents; however they are linked to a Gmail account, created and saved online in the cloud, and you can invite others to collaborate and work together on the same document. You can create a document, PowerPoint, Excel spreadsheet, assessment or survey and many other options. You will also become very familiar with this piece of technology.

Today we are going to be gathering information to help us in our research project! After you have accepted your invitation to Diigo, I want you to go online and begin researching evidence that helps to explain or define the impact of imperialism and annexation on the native populations of the world. What did the Cubans, Hawaiians or Philipinos really think about the U.S. and Americans? What type of resistance movements or rebel groups were formed? Were there protests and demonstrations against the U.S. involvement in their countries? Maybe you can find a primary source where these native peoples were writing to their families about how they felt.
When you find the information, fill in the Google Doc form below. Remember, we are only half of the way through the unit, so consider this an opportunity to get started thinking abour research project and gathering information.

Diigo! An amazing resource we will be using quite often during this unit!
Diigo is an online bookmarking website, that not only organizes information and websites, but allows you to digitally highlight and post "sticky notes" to your content, but also allows collaboration! What that means is that when any of us find important or interesting information, we can bookmark it to our Diigo group and we all have access to that information. We can all click on the link and it will take us to the information and we can all edit, highlight and attach stick notes. Sometimes I will already have articles or primary sources there that I have attached sticky notes to that have questions on them. You will have to click on those sticky notes and answer my questions. Other times I will upload a document and if will be up to each of you to highlight what you think is important information. So...I have set us up a class Diigo group! Once Mr. Dye and I have all of your email addresses, we will send you email "invitations" that allow you access to the Diigo group. Also, please note that wherever the word "Diigo" was used in this blog post, you can click on it and it is also a link to the Diigo website, so please feel free to click away and check it out. Also, below is a tutorial on using Diigo and a Screecast that I have made that moves a little slower and can walk you through it. You will (like it or not!) become familiar with this piece of technology.
